Project Experience:
Equine Facilities

Our Services

A unique capability of Peterson Structural Engineers is our experience in the structural design of Equestrian Facilities. Many of these facilities incorporate impressive expanses of multiple building types including: large enclosed riding arenas, stables, barns, and equipment buildings. These buildings are often quite large and can be structurally complex. Often times the Structural Design performed by PSE must be intricately intertwined with the architectural design. We have partnered with various Architectural firms specializing in Equine Facilities including Equine Architecture and Equine Facility Design.

Our firm provides engineering consultation, foundation design and construction documents for large span proprietary steel buildings used for riding arenas. We also perform complete structural designs on stables and barns with specific foundation and framing needs, some of which use intricate architectural connection detailing. Specialized stables, pumping and site facilities, large animal veterinary clinics and other projects all connected with equestrian usage have been designed by PSE from southern California through Washington, Nevada, Oregon and Hawaii.

Featured Projects

Wild Turkey Farm
2004-Present
Client: Equine Facility Design

Wild Turkey Farm was established in 1989 as an equestrian breeding and training facility in Woodside, California. In 2004, Equine Facility Design was engaged to provide the architecture for the design of the Farm’s new home just south of Portland, a site which spans more than 200 acres. PSE acted as the structural engineering consultant for the project, providing the structural design for the various new buildings on the property.
A new sport horse track lines the perimeter of the 180-acres to the north, and several acres of pastures and wooded trails preserve the natural beauty of the facility’s surroundings. New structures on the site include training, stallion, broodmare, and retirement barns as well as indoor and outdoor riding arenas, a veterinarian center, and a breeding facility and lab.

Tillamook Agricultural Buildings
2003
Client: United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS)

The National Resource Conservation Service works closely with the agricultural industry to protect the natural resources of the environment, specifically the effects of the agricultural industry on the land and water quality of the industrial land. The NRCS contracted PSE to provide structural engineering services for the design of four agricultural buildings to be designed by the NRCS for dairy operations in the Tillamook, Oregon watershed.

The purpose of the buildings was to provide hay and silage storage and to protect the watershed from agricultural waste runoff. The buildings were designed pole barn structures and varied in size from 4,000 to 8,000 square feet.
